When Tredgold Associates was looking for an efficient boiler that would live up to the grandeur of Chelmsford Cathedral, the Imax wall-hung condensing boiler from Ideal's commercial range definitely rose to the occasion.

The Cathedral Church of St. Mary, St. Peter and St. Chad is a 'jewel-like' Cathedral in the heart of Chelmsford. It became a Cathedral in 1914 when the Diocese of Chelmsford was created to meet the needs of the growing population east of London, and its light and colourful feel ensure that it is still regularly used by a whole range of people from the local community.

Towards the end of 2003, mechanical consultants Tredgold Associates were approached to discuss replacing the now quite antiquated heating system. In particular they were looking to set up a separate system in the chancel area, regularly used by the choir and clergy.

There is a small annex on the side of the Cathedral, which wasn't being heated effectively with the previous system, explains Mark Sampson, managing director of Tredgold Associates. It was therefore decided to give it a separate heating system. This also meant the annex could be heated without firing up the boiler that heats the whole Cathedral, making the system much more efficient.

Despite needing to heat a much smaller area than the Cathedral itself, Mark was still looking for a boiler that could meet the necessary high output and could be fixed to the wall. He decided to specify an Ideal Imax commercial condensing boiler. The Imax met all the necessary criteria and also carried the Ideal brand name, continued Mark. I have used a number of Ideal's boilers in the past and they have always been reliable, so I was confident that the Imax would be the same.

The Imax wall-hung range are fully condensings boiler with modulating outputs from 13 to 80kW ensuring that they run as efficiently as possible, matching the output to meet the required load. It has a robust cast aluminium heat exchanger and its integral commissioning and fault diagnostics make it straightforward to install and enable any issues to be easily solved.

Mark Sampson worked closely with installation company PD Lawrence and Son to fit the boiler at the Cathedral. Managing Director Andrew Lawrence comments:

We also regularly install Ideal's boilers, in a range of commercial and domestic installations. Ideal produces extremely easy to understand literature and the Imax is one of a number of well-finished products from the company. The installation at Chelmsford Cathedral was very straightforward. The client was very happy with the result and there have been no problems with the boiler since it was fitted.

Following the success of the installation at Chelmsford, Mark and Andrew have worked together on a number of other projects where the Imax boiler was used. I would definitely recommend it to other consultants and contractors says Mark. It is a very flexible product and suitable for use in a number of situations. I have recently been working on some top-of-the-range luxury housing. A domestic boiler can't generally cope with the demands of such large housing, but a compact commercial boiler such as the Imax is perfect.
